Liner giants are racing to expand their footprint in the Indian market, with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk preparing to reflag container vessels under the Indian flag. Specifically, Maersk plans to reflag two 2010-built container ships, the “Maersk Vilnius” and “Maersk Vigo,” to India. The “Maersk Vilnius” completed its reflagging in October, while the “Maersk Vigo” has yet to finalize the process. CMA CGM pioneered this approach by reflagging vessels to strengthen its Indian market presence. On April 28, the 2,592 TEU container ship “CMA CGM Vitoria,” previously registered in Malta, was reflagged to India. Concurrently, MSC plans to announce next week its own reflagging initiative to bolster its Indian market footprint. This initiative by leading liner companies aligns closely with India's maritime vision. India aims to rank among the world's top ten shipbuilding nations by 2030 and become one of the top five by 2047. As of now, Maersk has not formally confirmed its plans, with an announcement expected during India Maritime Week in 2025.
