DP World and Maersk Join Forces to Operate Saudi Arabia's South Jeddah Container Terminal, Further Upgrading the Red Sea Hub
Dubai Ports World (DP World) and APM Terminals, a subsidiary of Maersk, recently announced a partnership to develop the South Container Terminal at the Port of Jeddah Islamika in Saudi Arabia. Under the agreement, APMT will hold a 37.5% minority stake, while DP World retains a 62.5% controlling interest and continues to lead operations.
In a joint statement, the parties stated: “This investment strengthens the long-term collaboration between the two organizations. By integrating complementary capabilities, it will enhance the Port of Jeddah Islam Port's position as a vital gateway for Saudi Arabia and a key Red Sea hub connecting trade routes between Asia, Europe, and Africa.”
The terminal is a key project developed by DP World following its acquisition of a 30-year BOT concession in 2019. Officially launched in March this year, it represents a total investment of approximately $800 million. With a total berthing length of 2,150 meters and a water depth of 18 meters, the terminal can accommodate five ultra-large container ships simultaneously.
Following a three-year expansion, its annual throughput capacity has increased from 1.8 million TEUs to 4 million TEUs, with space reserved for further expansion to 5 million TEUs. Additional quay cranes will be added as demand warrants.
Notably, the two companies have established integrated logistics services in Jeddah, including warehousing, distribution, and inland transportation, driving deep integration between the port and the supply chain.
DP World CEO Yuvraj Narayan stated: “Saudi Arabia is a strategic market for us, and the Port of Jeddah Islamic Port has been central to our operations for over two decades. This collaboration reflects the confidence global industry leaders have in our capabilities and world-class terminals.”
APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen added: “Jeddah serves as a vital gateway to Saudi Arabia. This investment ensures we can support our customers with reliable, scalable capacity while deepening our operational footprint in the Kingdom.”
