Tanzania's election turmoil triggers unrest, shutting Dar es Salaam port and causing severe disruptions to East African supply chains.

Following Tanzania's general election, the country's key maritime hub, the Port of Dar es Salaam, has ceased operations due to widespread domestic unrest. Logistics providers confirm that as of October 31, 2025, the port remains completely shut down with all on-site operations suspended. All vessel transportation and cargo handling activities have been halted, resulting in backlogs and delays for goods in transit.

The immediate trigger for the port shutdown was election-related social unrest. To address the escalating situation, the government has implemented a series of emergency measures, including curfews and internet service interruptions, while deploying additional police forces to protect core economic facilities like the port. It should be noted that prior to this incident, Dar es Salaam Port was already facing severe congestion due to equipment turnaround issues and berth scheduling problems, with vessels experiencing average waiting times of approximately 3.45 days.

As the primary import-export gateway for Tanzania and the East African region, this port serves a critical function in providing maritime services to multiple landlocked neighboring countries. Its normal operation is vital for regional trade stability. The current political turmoil, compounded by existing operational pressures, is expected to pose ongoing risks of transport disruptions and delivery delays across East Africa's logistics network.

Shippers and logistics companies with cargo flows to and from East Africa are hereby advised to closely monitor developments at Dar es Salaam Port and promptly develop contingency plans to mitigate potential commercial losses resulting from the port closure.
