Intensive wave of strikes in Italy in December hits transportation and logistics

Dec,05,2025visited: 798

In December 2025, Italy will witness a series of nationwide strikes, significantly affecting transportation, logistics, and daily life. The most notable one is the nationwide strike on December 12th, initiated by the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL). Workers from both the public and private sectors are expected to participate extensively, potentially causing the most severe disruption to commuting and daily travel this month. Freight transportation will also be affected, with logistics companies having received warnings of possible delays in cargo delivery and tight transportation capacity.

Previously, a 24-hour strike was scheduled to take place on December 9th in the public transportation system of Rome, encompassing bus, subway, and tram lines operated by Atac. Given that it follows closely after the national holiday on December 8th, the traffic pressure in the capital may further intensify.

From the same day until December 11, ferry services across the country will also be suspended. Maritime and administrative personnel of ferry companies such as Tirrenia CIN and Moby will go on a 48-hour strike, affecting routes connecting mainland Italy with Sardinia, Sicily, and other islands.

The aviation sector is also not calm. From 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on December 17th, ground crews, employees of multiple airlines, and air traffic controllers will go on strike nationwide, affecting major airports in Italy and potentially disrupting airspace operations.

In addition, during the peak Christmas shopping period from December 22nd to 24th, employees of Number 1 Logistics Group will go on a 72-hour nationwide strike, which may lead to severe delays in parcel delivery, affecting e-commerce order fulfillment and retail supply chains. This series of intensive strike actions has made December one of the most unstable months for transportation and logistics in Italy in recent years.
